Design

While working for the Great Game Travel Company I produced several designs that were subsequently used in marketing. You can view the leaflet design here. The folder covers below were used to hold fact sheets on the company tours. I have always loved old maps and the sense of history they evoke. I found some maps hosted by David Rumsey and obtained his permission to use them.

I had design authority and wanted to use an old map of Central Asia as the backdrop with some evocative images in the folder front. The main image of a valley sums up my experience of living in Tajikistan. Stunning scenes surround every village and city as mountains tower over foothills and glacier fed rivers wind their way through narrow valleys.

Folder Cover

While I worked for the Great Game Travel Company we had stands at several travel shows including Adventure Travel Show in London and ITB Berlin. We had a need for a large display that would attract clients to our stand. The guidelines for the design were for a 2 meters high by 1 meter banner with an image or images that portrayed the kind of adventure holidays we were selling. The design used for the completed banner is shown below:

Software Development

As a contractor for Sun Microsystems, I have optimized and developed StarOffice 8 Calc reporting tools using spreadsheets and Visual Basic code. Project aims achieved:

  • optimizing speed of code – Report run time improved 90 percent
  • ensuring reporting accuracy is maintained – through testing and audits
  • documenting changes, spreadsheet construction and code
  • development of additional automation tools to save manual work

Working as a technical developer within Barclays Stockbrokers Management Information team, my role comprised development of applications, automating business processes, writing macros and managing a second line support service for over 200 existing VBA applications and databases.

Major projects completed include:

  • Development of support call logger – allows management of all open support calls; established a knowledge database of how support calls are resolved; and enabled provision of MI
  • Development of an application to track conversion of leads into sales.

Both projects use Excel forms as a front end, writing and reading from Access databases. This enables database functionality without users requiring MS Access on their PC's.

From March 2008 I took on the role of supervisor of a junior technical developer. As a team we were responsible for small to medium development projects and support of existing VBA applications.

Through a Business Objects pilot project, gained experience in writing Business Objects reports. Data was gathered on a daily basis from a dozen sources and transferred using DTS into a SQL Server 2000 database. Gained experience in development and debugging of SQL Server 2000 DTS packages, Stored Procedures, User Defined Functions and SQL scripts. In addition, used ClearCase to manage version control of the database.

My role at Alfred McAlpine Business Services Ltd included managing software development projects from initial requirements gathering phase through to delivery. Analysing and documenting existing MS Access and C-ISAM Databases; analysing and documenting existing SQL and VBA reporting tools; improving efficiency of existing ODBC reports; developing new SQL reports in MS Access; developing database systems and VBA functions; use of ADO and DAO; requirements gathering, design, testing, development, writing technical and user documentation, and training of users.

I was assigned to the requirements gathering and 'As is' definition phases of a company wide Front Office Systems review, working alongside Deloitte consultants.

A major part of my role has involved interpreting diverse business rules for reporting and developing VBA systems to allow accurate reporting to take place.

In 2005 I was contracted to Crown Prosecution Service Direct to develop and implement a Rostering System in MS Access 2000.

The role included managing a Rapid Applications Development project, analyzing the clients requirements, designing a database system that could be accessed over a Wide Area Network, designing and developing SQL reports, implementation of business rules, VBA coding, testing of the system, writing project handover documents, user manuals and technical documentation.

The contract at Nestle (UK) Ltd was to redesign Excel 2000 spreadsheets and VBA macros to enable the management of manufacturing performance.

The role included analysis of existing systems and information gathering tools; design of spreadsheets, user interfaces, and VBA code; implementation of spreadsheets; user training and support; testing; and the provision of user manuals and technical documentation.

My first Flash game, still a work in progress, can be found in the Flash section of this site. It is based on the popular Asteroids game and written entirely in Actionscript.
